This article will serve as a short report from the middle of the project that started back in 2011. This project was started to assess the workload and turnover that is generated from this kind of farming. This report was created to show the extension of economic gain from this kind of project.
Three important methods were used on this project, small area that is used for cultivation, absence of any form of mechanised labor and larger focus or intensification of production on that area.
Initial phase of the study was conducted in an area already under the farm production. Later it was expanded on larger surfaces until it reached maximum of 1 000 square meters. Reason for this kind of study is to avoid the study of parts of the area which would represent a leverage for better or for worse in the final data. Introduction of land that is studied continued up to the fall of year 2015.
Whole area was divided in sectors, and study was conducted on all 70 sectors. Two types of sectors were present in the study, round mounds and wooden bordered beds.
Workload part of the study is important because no machines were used while working on this area. Total hours spent working during a year was 1 400 hours. This number brought us to 35 hours spent on work in a week. Most of those hour were done during summer, autumn and spring, while the least of them were during winter. And a lot of those hours were spent on work in greenhouses. Workload can be divided and explained in few categories:
Preparation of the soil which can be done by a tiller, but was done by hand tools only. This category includes the preparation and distribution of mulch.
Seed preparation and other tasks that correspond that, sowing and planting time, harvest and so on.
Maintenance that includes a number of tasks, weeding, physical protection, fertilization and other things.
Some of these tasks were done by cheap workforce because those tasks didn’t require any specialization. Weeding was one of those tasks.
Turnover was calculated by number of crops produced and they were priced like other organic products. Few things affected this data, and most of those things were issues that didn’t come from the farm:
First problem was that production exceeded demand. His caused the prices to go down. Some of the products were gifted to charities while some ended in compost. And this is an issue a permaculturist can’t do anything about, it is about people and their choice of what they want on their tables.

Through history permaculture has evolved, and as it was expected it gained a set of rules, tenets and principles of design that people involved in permaculture teach others. These so called rules are important for every human, and it should be followed in order not to continue destruction to our planet and its natural habitats.
There are three tenets that are in core teachings of every permaculture oriented teacher, and is important to know by everyone.
First principle is to take care of the earth. Help natural system to work as naturally as possible. With healthy earth we people can live healthy life.
Second principle is about taking care of people. Using energy nature gives us we can gain new ways of living from it.
Third tenet is so called fair share. It means that if we take from nature we should give something back. In this case we should recycle waste and if possible return it to nature.
Permaculture has 12 principle designs it teaches everyone to follow, I should write but a few words about each one.
- Observe nature and interact with it in order to learn from it and use that knowledge in everyday life. And improving that life with more healthy and green solutions.
- Be certain to gain something from work you invest in permaculture. Don’t work for nothing, permaculture works well if you gain something from your time spent on nature, in order to do it again.
- Learn to get natural energy and find ways to store them for future use.
- Tell others to improve their interaction to nature, and with that try preventing them from further destruction of nature.
- Try to depend less on non-renewable resources and try to integrate renewable resources in your life as much as you can.
- Try not to produce too much waste. This can be done by using thing that should be waste and implementing them elsewhere.
- Try to find natural patterns and integrate them in your life. Every natural system has patterns on which It is based and by observing them we can see thing that could help our designs too. Those things should not be overlooked.
- If you want to create and maintain permaculture system start small. Smaller systems are easier to maintain and you can use local resources.
- Diversity is a key for a good permaculture system and you should have a lot of diversity in your system. This will reduce chances of external threats to your system.
- Put things together in a system you try to maintain, some rather not expecting connection could happen.
- Risk with things you wouldn’t think about doing to your system, and see results, they will surprise you, as nature often does.
- Natural system are changing, so we should be not surprised with permaculture systems doing so too. Don’t try to stop it, change you approach and observe.
